I'd like to share a couple of canny ideas about working in Spain that I think you'll find useful and to provide some food for thought so you generate some ideas of your own should you be looking for a job in Spain or indeed, any Hispanic country.

One thing I will say straight away and it’s obvious I know, but the truth is that no matter what type of work you are seeking, having a good grasp of Spanish will be invaluable.

So, you’re thinking of working in Spain and you’re looking for some ideas to help you in your quest. Here’s three brilliant tips to help you to find the ideal job.

Apunte Uno: Can you sort out work before you get here, either by making what you do portable, which is what I did, or by securing a job before you leave? David my Dutch friend did some research and found that his company has offices and workshops all around the Mediterranean including Barcelona. He simply asked if he could be transferred to Barcelona and 3 months later he was working in Spain in Barcelona and Majorca. Sometimes it really can be that simple to step into your dream and maybe because it is so simple, people just don't realize this possibility.

Apunte Dos: Do you possess skills that you could teach to others? For fluent English speakers, English especially business English is worth exploring as an option. Another would be teaching a musical instrument and another idea for working in Spain would be life coaching or fitness coaching, or even IT skills. Brainstorm but have a guiding thought: put lifestyle first and work second. You don't want to end up swapping treadmills as this is what leads to disillusionment and then eventually to giving up. If you end up doing the same things in your new life as you did in your previous you haven't changed and gradually you'll feel disheartened by it all.

Apunte Tres: When you've decided where and how you want to live, begin the search for work and be as proactive as you possibly can. You can start well before you leave and the Internet is the first port of call. Crank up your machine, get your favorite search engine ready to go and then look for classified sites for the place(s) where you'll be heading off to. Por ejemplo:

Madrid Classifieds

Buenos Aires Clasificados

Barcelona Anuncios Gratis

Honestly, you will find dozens of these sites and they are valuable resources without a dout. The sections of main interest are:

Empleo, Servicios and Otros Servicios

But have a good look around all of the sections because many advertisers post ads in multiple sections and you could discover a hidden gem.

Back to the search engine. Now type in: destination country expat, for example:

Spain Expat

Mexico Expat Blog

Again, you'll find plenty of sites and blogs dedicated to ex-pats and as well as having a classifieds section, they'll also have a forum. Sign up, introduce yourself, make some cyber-friends and search the forum for posts about working in Spain or wherever it is you’re hoping to find work. Submit a post stating what your plans are and ask for tips and you don't just have to do this for finding work, forums will be crammed with information surrounding all aspects of life in your chosen destination.

Last but not least we have specialist magazines. These really are a useful resource. Again, really easy, just type: destination magazine or destination guide into your search engine:

Buenos Aires Magazine

Andalucia Magazine

Madrid Guide

Costa Del Sol Blog

As well as containing lots of classifieds, you'll also find an abundance of practical and useful information about your destination.

Vale, that’s three really useful tips about working in Spain and the Spanish speaking world and in the next article here on Streetwise Spanish, I’ll share with you some fantastic tips to help you create an impressive resume so look out for it!

Nos vemos,
