Talking about the weather is something you're certain to do on your travels
almost everyday. Many people like to chat about the weather and Spanish and
Hispanic people are no different. In this article, you'll discover how you can
add an authentic feel and splash of color to your Spanish with some nice and
easy Spanish words and phrases for describing the weather.
When discussing the weather, many students of Spanish will normally rely on the
standard Spanish expressions they learned from formal Spanish studies. Phrases
like:
Hace sol, hace mucho viento y está lloviznando
Nothing wrong with those obviously, however, you can improve on them by adding
one or two more authentic Spanish phrases to bring in color and realism.
Vale, the weather is nice and sunny and you want to describe this in
Spanish:
Hace mucho calor hoy, ¡el sol pega fuerte! - It's so hot today, the sun
is beating down hard!

Here's a great Spanish phrase you can use when the weather isn't so good:
Hace un tiempo de perros hoy - The weather is terrible today
So simple and much more colorful and authentic. And streetwise of course!
Fortunately, the climate here in Catalonia is pretty mild all year round even
winter isn't that cold, however, if temperatures take a plunge in your location,
this phrase will do the job nicely:
¡Qué frío! ¡Está heladíssimo hoy! - What cold! It's freezing today!
The wind here really can blast in off the sea throughout the year including
summer. Viento is the Spanish word for wind, and here's how you describe
a very windy day:
¡Hace un viento de mil demonios! - There's a wind of a thousand demons!
Let's continue with a pair of really simple Spanish phrases to describe lengthy
spells of particularly hot or exceptionally cold weather that I'm sure you'll
find useful.
Una ola de calor - A heatwave and una ola polar - a cold spell - a
phrase I learned watching the television coverage of the snow storms that hit
Northern Spain last Winter.
To complete this article, a couple of very simple, practical Spanish expressions
for describing weather spells, I've used the second one quite a lot!
Hace tiempo revuelto - The weather is unsettled and: Hace tiempo seco
- Dry weather
Sprinkle these helpful Spanish expressions in to your vocab and give your spoken
Spanish a polished edge when you chat about the weather.
