A common question all students new to Spanish always ask is: what are the best ways to quickly learn Spanish language? With so many different ways available for students to choose from, it can be difficult to know which ones are the best to choose. Whilst it is true that people learn in different ways, the following three methods represent what I believe helped me the most to learn the language and make my life a lot easier here in the city of Barcelona.

1. Learn Spanish Language Courses - It is absolutely essential to take a Spanish language course and there is sure to be one on offer in your area. Usually, classes are scheduled for the evenings but some language schools do occasionally offer classes at the weekends and even though I do believe such a course is essential, there are a couple of things to be aware of. As I knew very little Spanish when I came to Barcelona, I took an intensive course over four weeks and I soon realized it was not a very good idea. Intensive Spanish language courses are a good choice for students who have already mastered the basics of Spanish but for students who are just beginning with Spanish, an intensive course may be too much too soon. Although I did learn some basic Spanish, I think I'd have learned more by attending classes over two evenings a week rather than five. Having an unimaginative teacher who merely read-aloud the course content which the students then repeated with no role-playing meant the classes weren't much fun as well. If possible, find out about the course tutor and get a description about how the course is taught because it's so important to have fun when you start to learn how to speak Spanish.

2. Learn Spanish Language Software - To augment the Spanish I was learning on my intensive course, I bought a learn Spanish language software course, which added variety to my studies. The one I chose was the "Rocket Spanish" course, and it is a the only product of this type that I endorse. It comes complete with audio, flashcards, quizzes and vocab builders as well as simple explanations for the verb tenses. Just using the audio and the flashcards daily for around half an hour is a nice and easy method to grow your Spanish vocabulary. Yes, lots of other learn Spanish language courses are being offered - Learn Spanish Like Crazy, Fluenz, Rosetta Stone, however, all I used was Rocket Spanish and it did the job I wanted.

3. Learn Spanish Language On The Streets - I admit this is probably a tad simpler for me as I'm living in a Spanish-speaking country however, I think speaking in Spanish with native speakers for just 20 minutes a day is the best method of all. It's also the way that arouses the most fear, particularly making a bad mistake but don't worry about it! I forced myself to go out and speak Spanish with the locals here and it really was the best thing I did. And you know, it wasn't hard, I didn't get laughed at or ignored, in fact, I had lots of fun and I received lots of respect and one or two treats from the warm-hearted people here. Native speakers will understand that you're trying hard to communicate in Spanish and trust me, they'll be keen to offer help. I have made so many friends here - and I continue to make new ones, even at the time of writing this - because I make the effort to speak Spanish with people here as much as I can. I may be in a shop, a café, a supermarket, the local market here where I am now greeted by stall-owners by name whenever I shop there or in a bar or a restaurant, I will speak Spanish to people and try and strike up a conversation and each time I do I learn lots more useful Spanish phrases. Resolve to do this as much as is possible and believe me, you'll greatly improve your Spanish and have a blast as you do!

Those are my three best methods to learn Spanish language and even though I used one or two other methods to help me learn Spanish, I think that these are the top three without a doubt.

Hasta ahora,

Peter Christian
