Are you, like me, the sort of person who loves to travel by plane and find
airports really exciting? Let's make the visit even more enjoyable with a
selection of quick-fire, useful, easy learn Spanish words and phrases
that are sure to come in useful whenever you're traveling by air.
¡Vamos a viajar en avión! - We're going to travel by air!
The first thing you need to do at the airport is to find the check-in desk -
el mostrador de facturación - so you can check-in - la facturación.
You'll also check-in luggage - el registro de equipaje - if you've
brought any with you. From here, you then go through the security check - el
control de seguridad - and these days, un registro personal - a body
frisk. When you've completed security you can proceed to the departure lounge
- la sala de espera.
Watching all the aeroplanes landing and taking off at the airport is something I
really like doing. To say this is Spanish is so easy:
Me gusta mucho mirar los aviones despegar y aterrizar
A runway is: la pista de aterrizaje which is often abbreviated to: la
pista.

When your flight - el vuelo - is called, it's time to board the aircraft.
Have a try at working out the Spanish in this simple expression:
Tenemos que embarcar el avión ahora. ¿Tienes la tarjeta de embarque?
I'm sure you worked it out! Embarcar is the Spanish verb "to board" and
la tarjeta de embarque is a boarding pass, really simple, no? Just hand
the flight attendant - el/la auxiliar de vuelo - your boarding pass and
go in to the cabin - entrar en el avión. Confusingly, la cabina del
avión is where the pilots fly the aircraft from, the cockpit.
When you've found your seat, settle yourself in and fasten your seatbelt - el
cinturón de seguridad - ready for take-off! Taking off is what I enjoy the
most because I love hearing the roar of the engines - el rugido de los
motores - while the plane is heading for the sky.
After the aeroplane has completed its landing, you can leave the airport through
arrivals - llegadas - but don't forget to reclaim your luggage -
recoger el equipage - first. For those times when you've flown half-way
around the world, el desfase horario - jet-lag - is one more helpful
Spanish phrase to add to your ever-increasing streetwise Spanish vocabulary.
