One of the more common Spanish phrases liberally used by non-native speakers is the phrase used to state that you like or dislike something:

Me gusta or No me gusta

Although these common Spanish phrases do the job, let's now add some really cool yet common Spanish phrases used by native Spanish speakers to help you express your enjoyment and appreciation of things and your disapproval of things that you don't like. Now there's nothing wrong with using "me gusta", but it's a bit dull and predictable so we're going to burst-out from these bland phrases and introduce a vibrant, authentic flair to your spoken Spanish!

The first Spanish phrase is great for describing things that you really like and is particularly good for those special occasions when you receive a nice gift.

Es la bomba translates as: It's brilliant! It's wonderful! To be exact: It's the bomb!

Ok, someone gives you a  nice gift:

Muchas gracias por tu regalito, el collar ¡es la bomba! - Thank you so much for your gift, the necklace is fabulous!

Or you want to say you enjoy watching a particular sport:

Disfruto mucho de ver MotoGP, ¡es la bomba! - I really enjoy watching MotoGP, it's brilliant!

Such smart useful Spanish phrases that are easy to introduce into your regular Spanish and they're a big improvement on me gusta for sure.

But what if you want to say that you don't like something?  These next two helpful Spanish phrases are ones I use frequently and are just the job.

First of the two is: Me irrita - It irritates me.

Let's say you see someone drop their garbage onto the streets:

Me irrita cuando la gente tira la basura en las calles - It irritates me when people throw their garbage onto the streets

It's a real bugbear of mine and I say this often! And the second canny phrase really is a gem and it will bring a realistic feel to your vocabulary. When we find something irksome, we'll say that it's getting on our nerves and it's so easy to say this in Spanish:

Tocarse Las Narices - To Get On Ones Nerves. Literally: To Touch Ones Nostrils.

Por ejemplo:

La música clásica me toca las narices - Classical music gets on my nerves

Really easy, yes?

Each of these simple smart Spanish phrases will bring realism to your Spanish and help you to burst-out of simple Spanish like me gusta. Using me gusta is alright for sure, however, it is very overused so it can be a bit plain and boring. Sprinkle in each of the common Spanish phrases above and you'll give your Spanish a vibrant, polished edge and a touch of realism that will earn you great respect from the locals wherever you are in the Spanish-speaking world.
